So quick, so easy, so affordable. This lentil gravy instantly upgrades any comfort meal. Use over mashed potatoes or as part of endless combinations at your holiday table. This is completely meatless for my vegan and vegetarian friends and carries all the nostalgia of brown sausage gravy.
Ingredients
- ½ cup dry lentils
- 1 medium onion
- 2 tbsp garlic
- 1 tsp red pepper flakes
- Dash of chili powder (optional)
- Favorite .87 oz pack of brown gravy mix
- Salt to taste
- Fresh ground pepper to taste
- Garlic powder to taste
- Onion Powder to taste
- Adobo seasoning salt to taste
Directions
- Pre-soak clean lentils in water 6-8 hours or overnight. You can also bring to a brisk boil before cooking if you forget to soak them.
- Simmer for 15-20 minutes or until lentils are soft and slightly firm.
- In a separate saucepan sauté diced onion, garlic, red pepper flakes and chili powder over medium heat until the onion is caramelized
- Add in your cooked lentils, salt, pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, and seasoning salt. Stir until well combined.
- Add in your gravy mix and finish cooking according to package instructions. I’ve found an extra ½ cup of water or so may be needed to achieve your desired consistency.
- That’s it, enjoy!
Pairs well with Trader Joe’s vegan holiday roast
